Nephrology Physician

Position Summary
Provide onsite nephrology services to veterans at the Hershel "Woody" Williams VA Medical Center. The physician will cover inpatient consultations, outpatient clinics, and dialysis oversight while participating in rotating after-hours call. The contract uses a pool of two to three credentialed nephrologists to maintain one physician onsite each weekday and continuous call coverage.

Clinical Responsibilities
• Evaluate and manage acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, hypertension, and fluid and electrolyte disorders.
• Provide inpatient bedside consultations and outpatient nephrology clinic services, including timely review and completion of consults.
• Prescribe and oversee hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, prolonged intermittent kidney replacement therapy, and continuous kidney replacement therapy.
• Manage dialysis vascular access and procedural complications, and oversee the delivery of dialysis care under VA kidney health requirements.
• Evaluate and manage nephrolithiasis, kidney transplant patients, and extracorporeal treatment for poisonings and intoxications.
• Perform central or femoral venous dialysis catheter placement and percutaneous kidney biopsy when privileged and when the service is not otherwise provided by the VA.
• Communicate test results, provide discharge education and follow-up instructions, and coordinate care with the next treatment setting.
• Document all care promptly and accurately in the VA electronic health record while protecting patient privacy and confidentiality.
Professional and Administrative Responsibilities
• Chair the monthly Dialysis Committee and attend the monthly staff meeting and other meetings required by VA leadership.
• Complete quality management documentation for procedures, complications, and patient outcomes.
• Participate in focused and ongoing professional practice evaluations, peer review, and continuous quality improvement activities.
• Follow VA medication, infection control, patient safety, privacy, and medical staff requirements.
• Report patient safety incidents promptly and complete required VA reporting within 24 hours.

Schedule and Call Coverage
• Work 40 onsite hours per week during normal business hours, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, excluding federal holidays.
• Participate in a physician rotation that maintains one nephrologist onsite each weekday.
• Provide on-call coverage whenever the clinic is closed, including weeknights, weekends, and federal holidays.
• Weeknight call runs from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Weekend call runs from 4:30 p.m. Friday through 8:00 a.m. Monday.
• Remain reachable by pager or cell phone while on call, respond by phone within 15 minutes, and arrive onsite within 60 minutes when called back.

Required Qualifications
• MD or DO degree with the education and training required to practice nephrology independently.
• Board certification or documented board eligibility in nephrology through the American Board of Internal Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.
• Current, full, and unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. A current or prior restricted, suspended, revoked, surrendered, or denied license is disqualifying under the solicitation.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification.
• Current Drug Enforcement Administration registration and National Provider Identifier.
• Demonstrated competence caring for nephrology and critically ill patients, including knowledge of kidney disease pathophysiology and renal replacement therapies.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English fluently.
• Ability to complete VA credentialing, privileging, orientation, electronic health record training, and all mandatory annual training before providing care.
• Current continuing medical education, required immunizations and health screenings, federal work authorization, and eligibility to participate in federal healthcare programs.
Performance Expectations
• Practice within approved privileges and meet VA, Joint Commission, National Kidney Foundation, KDIGO, and accepted community standards.
• Be present and ready at the scheduled clinic start time and maintain dependable availability throughout assigned coverage.
• Maintain all licenses, registrations, certifications, privileges, and required training throughout the assignment.
• Support continuity of care through timely documentation, communication, and participation in the coverage rotation.
